Clemson Universitys Career Services Associate Director of Analytics and Initiatives Kathy Horner weighed in.Jon SnowThe bastard who would be king (wen t from feeling like he was never part of the family, to becoming Lord Commander of the Nights Watch, to being resurrected from the dead. All this while keeping his hair long and perfectly tousled (as per actor Kit Harringtons contract).Horner believes career lessons we can learn from Snow are to always do what is right (display integrity ethics on a resume and in interviews). While youre at it, Develop and demonstrate leadership skills. Be persistent in finding positions and companies in which you believe in their values and you are able to fight for what you believe in. Maintain loyalty but dont be abused. One more tip If someone keeps offering you criticism, accept it. Ygritte told Jon You know nothing Jon Snow 19 separate times. Maybe if hed listened to her, shed have had a happier ending.Sansa StarkWhen the show began, we didnt know all that much about the eldest Stark daughter other than she favored lemon cakes, ornate hairstyles, and obnoxious princes. That all changed when po or Sansa became a pawn for the Lannisters, the Boltons, Littlefinger, and pretty much anyone seeking a marriage of convenience. But Sansa learned how to play the game and evolved past her naivete to become a strong, powerful woman unrecognizable to her younger self.Horner believes we can learn from Sansa to Display adaptability and self-awareness recognizing that issues, beliefs or stances might need to change in light of new information. As a girl, Sansa Stark was only given glimpses into what the big picture of her life story could be. As she matured, she learned not only from what people told her but from her own experiences.Horner says Sansa can inspire us to remain steadfast in the face of challenges and understand the power of strategic partnerships/alliances. Hone your analytical skills to see multiple sides of things. If youre having a tough time at work, dont ally yourself with the first sympathetic person who comes your way. Pay attention to the inner workings and politics of the office and only form connections that can mutually strengthen and benefit your respective careers.Arya StarkIts hard being the youngest girl in a traditional family when all you really want to do is stick your sword in things. Aryas path is nothing like those we usually read happens to girls born into privilege. Horner believes the career inspiration from Arya includes the fact that you should be true to yourself and step outside of the stereotypical gender roles. Forge your own path based on your interests and skills. Develop and hone skills in communication and adaptability. Challenge the glass ceiling.Arya was an adept goal creator and list keeper. While Im not suggesting that you make a list of enemies you hope to kill someday, its not the worst idea to keep track of those that have harmed you professionally and then avoid them. Unlike Jaime Lannister, people dont usually change that drastically.Daenerys TargaryenHorner thinks one of the greatest skills displayed by the Mother of Dragons is her resiliency and ethical leadership. 5 Things You Need to Know About Implementing Personality Assessments

5 Things You Need to Know About Implementing Personality Assessments 5 Things You Need to Know About Implementing Personality Assessments That being said, it can be quite tricky to actually integrate these assessments into your hiring process, especially if youve never dealt with them extensively. If youre in need of some guidance when it comes torolleality assessments, here are a few lessons weve learned as a company that should help you when it comes time to bring personality assessments into your workplace1. Yourein Good CompanyThe majority of organizations between 60 and70 percent of them, according to some estimatesuse personality assessments to evaluate employees. As more and more companies begin to warm up to the idea that fit is more than just a combination of job experience, training, and skills, they are turning to personality assessments to help them truly evaluate candidates in useful and accurate ways. Many of todays top organizations have found personality assessments to be invaluable tools in their hiring processes.2. They Need to Be ritterlichPersonality assessments are one of the best ways to evaluate whether or not a given candidate isgoing to fit in atyour company but only if you assessments measure everyone against the same criteria, and only if those criteria are fair to diverse groups of people. Otherwise, you may make some truly poor hiring decisions based on inaccurate data.Oh, and one more thing If your personality assessments do not fairly measure all candidates by the same objective and unprejudiced metrics, then you may be leaving yourself open tolawsuits from candidates who feel your organization discriminated against themdue to their background or ethnicity.Be very careful that your personality assessmentsallabide by federal and state hiring laws3. Hiring Might Take a Bit Longer, But It Will Be Worth ItOnce youve incorporated personality assessments into your hiring process, you might find that some seemingly qualifiedcandidates dontmeet your new, more demanding standards. As a result,it may take longer than youre used to to find candidate who do make the cut but dont worry, because this is a good thing.See, personality assessments are helping you set the bar higher. Fewer candidates will be able to meet this bar, but the ones who do will be great culturalfits. You can also think of it as a trade-off You may be increasing your time-to-hire a bit, but in exchange, you can lower your turnover by as much as 12 percent.4. They Let Everyone ShineFor a long time, many employers thought that extroverts were always better sales candidates than introverts. The argument, which seems sound on the surface, is that an extroverts outgoing personality would help them make more and better sales, whereas an introverts quieter personality would prevent them from inspiring others to buy a companys products.Studies have shown this to be patently untrue. In actuality, it is the ambivert the person who has a mixture of introve rted and extroverted qualities who makes the best salesperson. Personality assessments can help these ambiverts shine brightly where they might otherwise be buried under a sea of enthusiastic extroverts.Of course, the foregoing is just an example of one of the ways in which personality assessments can help employers find great candidates they may have otherwise missed. Personality assessments let everybody shine in their own way, giving organizations fuller pictures of their talent pipelines.5. They Are More Accurate Than You Might ThinkThis all sounds well and good, butcouldnt candidates fake their answers on these tests, making them inaccurate anduseless? The answer is No, not really. Although candidates couldtry toanswer questions according to what they think employers want to hear, rather than according to the truth, most personality assessments are aware that candidates sometimes try to do this. These assessments actually take into account candidates attempts to outsmart them a nd produce accurate results even when the candidates are not being totally honest Personality assessments dont really have right or wrong answers they just give insight into what a candidate is like.-Bringing a personality assessment into your hiring process may feel intimidating, but dont worry As long as you know what to expect, youll be setting yourself up for hiring success.

4 ways to fix a bad first impression at work

4 ways to fix a schwimmbadeanstalt first impression at work4 ways to fix a bad first impression at workYou were behind a failure of epic proportions at work. But not only that - you just so happened to embarrass yourself while meeting your new boss for the first time.Heres how to move forward in a more positive direction after making a bad first impression in the office.Be crystal clear about itThink about it You have nothing to lose. For Simon Sinek, author of Leaders Eat Last, it all boils down to honesty. In a recent Inc. video, he talks about how explaining that youre not proud of your first impression - and doing so over the phone, not sending an email - can be an effective tool.Heres the script he recommends using I think I came across poorly when I met you. I was a little bit excitable and I think I was nervous and I just wanted to put it out there that I wasnt particularly proud of how I came across.Dont let them see you sweatTry not to get too tripped up by your mistake.Al ysa Wishingrad writes on the JPatrick + Associates Executive Recruiters blog about how to keep your cool during an interview where youve come off the wrong way.Think back to the last time you were watching a live wertzuwachs and a dancer slipped, or an actor flubbed their lines, Wishingrad writes. The dancer who seamlessly continues on with the choreography or the actor who allows the gaffe play in their favor often wind up as audience favorites. Its the ones who pull a face, or get so flustered they cant find their place that lose the audiences favor.Show the value of your contributionsProve that you have a lot to offer.Heidi Grant, Ph.D., author, Senior Scientist at the Neuroleadership Institute, and associate director for the Motivation Science Center at Columbia University, writes in the Harvard Business Review about employing what psychologists reportedly deem outcome dependency, which essentially means that others cant get what they want without cooperation from you.To create outcome dependency, try to identify opportunities for collaboration. For example, if your supervisor has underestimated you, consider asking for an assignment that would allow you to work with her more closely. Its natural to shy away from people who dont think highly of you, but you need to fight that instinct and instead stick to them like glue if you hope to correct their misperceptions. Things will get much more comfortable once they begin to realize that youre not so bad after all, Grant writes.Switch things upLet them see you in a different light.Journalist, digital media consultant, and investor John Boitnott writes about how to do this in Entrepreneur. Some professionals have found that the best way to overcome a bad first impression is to show a completely different side of themselves. If youve made a joke and its fallen flat, follow up by showing your serious side. If you feel that youve overreached in your efforts to be professional and come across as pompous or rude, try to lighten the mood with a little self-deprecating humor, Boitnott writes. Often revealing a completely different side of yourself can make a difference in showing that someone cant get to know you in just a few seconds.

10 words and phrases you might be using wrong

10 words and phrases you might be using wrong10 words and phrases you might be using wrongAh, grammar - people either hate it with every fiber of their beings or absolutely love it, and Ive always fallen into the latter category. Luckily, Im an editorial assistant and copy editor here at The Everygirl, which means my days are filled with correcting all of the mistakes my word-filled heart could ever desire. With this, however, comes correcting the same mistakes - over, and over, and over, and over. There are a select few grammar mistakes that people continually make, and in the same breath, words and phrases that people continually misuse.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWhile I already dove into themost common writing mistakes I see, I also see the same words and phrases misused all of the time. These are the ones that are at the top of my list (and the list isbedrngnisa place you want to be).1. Trust me, I get it - contrary to what I said when I got into the office this morning, I wasnotliterally going to die if I didnt get an iced americano. But in writing, literally is used frequently where it isnt necessary - literally means that something is actually literal. While it isnt necessary to say a jacket that only comes in four colors comes in literally a thousand colors, you could have received literally 100 emails today- literallyWhile youre writing, your best bet is to stick to literally when you really mean it.2. 6 Things That Make You Look Amateur on Your Resume

6 Things That Make You Look Amateur on Your Resume 6 Things That Make You Look Amateur on Your Resume Not everyone has the golden resume, filled with impressive job experiences that any employer would be crazy to bedrngnis consider. When we are just starting out, it can be hard to even fill the page of a resume simply because we dont have the experience yet. But thats not a reason to have your resume look amateur. Here are six things that make your resume look less professional, and what you can do to avoid them1. Short-term jobs. If you quit a job after a few weeks because you couldnt see your future there, dont put it on your resume. Employers look at short-term jobs as a sign that youre flighty, and you want to avoid that perception at all costs. If you have more short-term jobs (that relate to the one you want) than long-term, or many short-term consulting arrangements, you can add them into a section for one year. If you are listing many consulting assignments, make sure its clear in your resume that it was not a full-time, permanent position.2. Job experience that doesnt relate. If youre trying to work as an administrative assistant, but one of your past jobs was working as a restaurant server, leave that one off the list. However, if your job history doesnt provide enough experience for the Work History section of your resume, find ways to connect the unrelated work to what you want to do.For example, when you worked as a server, were there any tasks that related to the administrative assistant position youre vying for? You might be surprised to find that some of the skills you learned will translate for the job you want. Highlight these points in your resume. 3. Every responsibility you had at a job. Focus on a high level, and keep only what relates to the job youre applying for. A resume isnt the place to copy your job description instead, its meant to highlight the best of what youve done at past companies and tie it to what you will do with your next e mployer.4. References. While you do need a list of people who can vouch for you as an employee and overall exemplary citizen, you dont have to include the list with your resume. And dont add the phrase References Available Upon Request. Its a given you have and will provide references when it comes to that point in the interview process.5. Hobbies. Many argue that listing your hobbies on your resume gives the employer a better sense of your overall character. While that might be true, hobbies can also be used against you and employers can jump to conclusions about you before having the gunst der stunde to meet you. Unless the hobby relates to the job you want and its not covered in your job experience, keep it off.6. Why you left a job. Save this for the interview. Some job applications may ask for this information, but never volunteer it on your own. Explanations on your resume are required to be brief and could easily cast you in a negative light. Its much better to discuss this i n person when youll have the opportunity to explain further, if necessary.Lindsay Olson is a founding partner and public relations recruiter with Paradigm Staffing and Hoojobs.com, a niche job board for public relations, communications, and social media jobs. Basic Digital Skills Can Lead to a Middle Class Life

Basic Digital Skills Can Lead to a Middle Class Life Odds are if you are reading this article, you have some digital skills. The real question isdo you have the right ones? A new report shows a growing divide between those who have certain digital skills and those who are falling behind. A study of job postings by Burning Glass Technologies and Capital One found that middle-skill jobs that require digital skills are outpacing those that do not in a number of ways. Middle-skill jobs, according to the report, are those with less than 80 percent of postings calling for a bachelors degree and with a median hourly wage above the national living wage of $15 per hour. Middle-skill jobs currently comprise 39 percent of total employment in the U.S., the report says. The research was funded by the Capital One Foundation, which announced a Future Edge kampagne that will bestow $150 million in community grants and initiatives over the next five years to help empower mora Americans to succeed in an ever-changing digitally-driven economy.Pretty bluntly, the report comes to this conclusion a job seeker without the ability to use programs like Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Word not only wont get hired, but they most likely wont even get an interview. Skills many of us take for granted are barring some peoplefrom meaningful employment. In addition to word processing skills, other in-demand abilitiesinclude the use of medical billing programs and the running ofcomputerized drill presses. Some key findings of the Burning Glass/Capital One reportNearly 8 in 10 middle-skill jobs require digital skills. Spreadsheet and word processing proficiencies have become a baseline requirement for the majority of middle-skill opportunities (78 percent).Digitally intensive middle-skill occupations are growing faster than other middle-skill jobs. Digitally intensive jobs have grown 2.5 times more rapidly than mi ddle-skill jobs that do not require spreadsheets, word processing, or other digital skills. Between 2003 and 2013, digitally intensive jobs grew by 4.7 percent, compared to 1.9 percent growth for other positions.Digitally intensive middle-skill jobs pay more than middle-skill jobs that do not include digital components. Digitally intensive middle-skill occupations offer 18 percent higher wages on average $23.76 per hour, compared to $20.14 per hour for all other middle-skill jobs.Writing for theWall Street Journal, Lauren Weber says that middle-skill jobs have become the holy grail to economists who are concerned that the U.S. labor market is becoming hollowed out, with employers adding mostly low-wage jobs for the two-thirds of workers without a college degree and high-paying jobs for graduates, but few jobs in between that can build and sustain a middle class. The Burning Glass Technologies report says that since the recovery from the recession, digitally intensive middle-skills jo bs have seen growth equal to that of high-skill positions. Its basically a statistical tie at 4.8 percent for the digital middle-skills jobs and 4.7 percent for the high-skill jobs in a three-year period from 2010 to 2013.Since they are growing more rapidly and pay more than other middle-skill jobs, these jobs offer a promising career path for Americans who lack a bachelors degree, the report says.On the flip side, jobs that dont require digital skills, like those primarily in transportation, construction, and installation/repair, lag in pay, growth, and opportunity. They have had the slowest growth of any category, behind even low-skill positions, by a significant margin of 1.9 percent for the non-digital middle skill jobs vs. the 2.9 percent for the low-skills jobs.Weber says thatBurning Glass used the 80 percent threshold becausemany employers are demanding college degrees for positions where the skills required dont suggest a degree should be necessary. Its a problem called cred ential creep.Interestingly, the Wall Street Journal circles back to an earlier report by Burning Glass to explain credential creep and how the demand for bachelors degrees is reshaping the workforce. The report in question found thatthere is a degree requirement for a wide range of jobs, but the requirement is most significant in fields that previously didnt mandate degrees. The gap, which is the difference between the percent of postings requiring the degree vs. the actual percent employed in the field that hold a degree, can be significant. The report said, For example, 65 percent of postings for Executive Secretaries and Executive Assistants now call for a bachelors degree. Only 19 percent of those currently employed in these roles have a B.A.

How to Get a Job if You Havent Worked in a While

How to Get a Job if You Havent Worked in a WhileHow to Get a Job if You Havent Worked in a WhileFall is just around the corner. Kids are (or alfruchtwein) back in school. Maybe youre starting to think about going back to work. It can be an overwhelming feeling. If youve been raising children, caring for sick loved ones or volunteering for an extended period, you may think youre out of the game and wont be able to rejoin the labor force. Its time to start thinking about what youve been doing during your employment eu-agrarpolitik. Once you determine the skills youve been utilizing during your time away, youll want to spend time refining your written and online presentation. There are clear and clever ways to address gaps and inconsistent work history that will help you get an interview. Ask yourself the following questionsWhat have I been busy doing? Many people discount volunteer positions, such as working with parent-teacher organizations or other nonprofit groups. These are impor tant, because you use a lot of skills that align with many paid jobs. Which of the skills Ive used during this period translate well to a job? If youve raised kids or taken care of a sick relative, you likely have strong coordination and management skills. When you work with a nonprofit or school organization, you often gain fundraising or volunteer coordination skills. If youve recruited and trained volunteers, youve been doing human resources work. How do I present this in a rsum? Career summary.Even if you do nothing else to enhance your rsum, the best thing to do is summarize your qualifications in a few lines or bullets at the top. This is not an objective statement those are a thing of the past. Include your areas of expertise here as well. These are not clichersumphrases, such as well-organized or manages time well. Research keywords specific to the industry or jobs you previously held, andinclude those in which you have a decent amount of knowledge.Key accomplishments. If y ou had a career prior to the gap that was high level, have worked for well-known companies or have significant accomplishments, create a key accomplishments section. Choose three to four major achievements. Rsum body. One of the best formats to use when you have a gap is a functional rsum. Group your job-description bullets by type of skill, and create a headline for each. Your jobs and volunteer positions (yes, these too) should be listed after this part with basic information job title, organization, location, and months and years held. Dont forget to include at the end awards, education (plus any professional development courses or conferences), publications and organizations with which you are affiliated. How do I brand myself online? For professional purposes, LinkedIn remains the most widely used medium. Create a profile, and fill in all sections that apply to you. LinkedIn will take you through each section and ask you questions to help you complete it. The headline, summary and descriptions of your employment and volunteer work are essential. While your rsum and LinkedIn profile should be different, make sure youre including as many skills from your industry that apply to your background. These should be included throughout your profile and not only in the skills section. How much do I share with an employer? It is best to be honest. You do not have to give a complete account of your years spent out of the workforce in a cover letter or rsum, but it will help an employer understand your story and the gap in work history if you are transparent. If you dont have volunteer or leadership positions that warrant a description, you should still explain what you have been doing during this time briefly in your cover letter and rsum. You dont want to leave what youve been doing during the gap up to the employers imagination. Its true that not all employers will be receptive to an employment gap, but many will as they recognize that people nowadays have differe nt career and life paths. Employers are starting to realize that many jobs can be taught what is much harder to do is find people with strong cognitive and interpersonal abilities who will succeed in most any job they encounter. It is costly for an employer to hire a person who has the required education and qualifications on paper but cannot work well on a team. If you can demonstrate this initially what you are capable of and that youre motivatedyoull be a strong contender for a variety of jobs.Marcelle Yeager is the president of Career Valet, which delivers personalized careernavigation services, and founder of ServingTalent, arecruitment and placement firm that matches military and government spouseswith employers. How to Connect Two People on LinkedIn (Template) - The Muse

How to Connect Two People on LinkedIn (Template) - The Muse How to Connect Two People on LinkedIn (Template) Let’s imagine you just received a message from one of your friends (let’s call her Anna) who saw you were connected to someone she wants an introduction to (let’s call him Bob). Anna may really want to connect to Bob, but you’re not quite sure how to go about it. You’re not exactly best friends and you don’t want to hurt your reputation in the process. This is a common situation (and kinda the whole point of LinkedIn…). And the good news is that it’s pretty simple to do. The big trick is to get your friend to do the heavy lifting. In fact, you’ll want to ask her to write a one to two paragraph message that you can easily send over. Here’s an example: Hi Emily, I stumbled across Bob Smith’s profile on LinkedIn as I was researching local meteorologists. I was particularly impressed with his published academic papers on climate change. His findings have not only made large contributions towards sustainability, but have also raised my awareness and impacted me to be make more conscious decisions in my purchases. I’m currently finishing up my PhD program (graduating next month!) at UC Berkeley in the area of Atmospheric Sciences and would be very interested in meeting a fellow Cal alumni with such extensive experience in the field. I’d very much appreciate an introduction in case our schedules sync up so I can treat him to a cup of coffee, as I admire the wealth of knowledge he has developed in the field. Thank you, Anna As you can see, Anna kept the message to two paragraphs at maximum. But more importantly, she answered the following questions: Why does she want the introduction? What about the person’s background interested her? What specifically about their experience made them special? What is her professional summary or background overview? What does she hope to get out of the introduction? By answering these four questions, Anna did two important things: She articulated everything better than the mutual connection could, and she made it effortless for the mutual connection to agree to send an introduction. Because now you can pen the message below, copy and paste Anna’s right under it, and hit send. Hey Bob, Anna, a good connection of mine, was really impressed by your background and I am thrilled to introduce you to her. I think the two of you would really enjoy connecting. Please see her message below and reach out directly if you have questions. What to Do if You Don’t Know the Other Connection Very Well While LinkedIn encourages users to only add and connect with people they actually know, many users are connected to people they’ve never actually met before. So, what do you do if someone asks you to introduce them to another person you hardly know? As the mutual connector, you might decide to just customize the message a little: Hi Bob, I hope this message finds you well. We connected on LinkedIn months back and I just received this message from an old classmate of mine, Anna. She saw we were connected and asked if I could introduce you to her. Please see her email below and reach out directly if interested in her request. Thank you! Emily Just remember, in this fast-paced world where people are being inundated with messages and notifications every few minutes, it’s important to be as clear and concise as possible. And that helping others by facilitating introductions not only makes you a strong networker, but people will reciprocate the favor for you in the future. I believe you’ll not only have fun doing it, but you’ll feel great helping others build meaningful and long-lasting relationships.

Study What to watch out for if you enter an office romance

Study What to watch out for if you enter an office romance Study What to watch out for if you enter an office romance Workplace romances are one of those things that are really easy to idealize, but the second you apply principled reasoning, the concept can just as easily fall to pieces. Relationships don’t need any help in the headache department without having to adjust for professional hierarchies, conflicts of interest and property damage. Maybe I’m just a close-minded cynic, considering a recent Monster survey found that  one in four employees are totally okay with the potential for office rendezvous. ”The implications of dating a coworker are best examined on a case-by-case basis. Thoroughly understanding a company’s policies and culture is imperative.” This appraisal comes from a Career and Advice   Expert involved in the report. Mary Ellen Slayter believes it’s less about the professional position of the worker and more about the perspective of the relationship in question. She continues, “No one should jeopardize a good job for a quick fling. But, if you develop a very special connection with a coworker, remember that exploring other career options is easy; true love is hard to find.”Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  Young Love at Work:    Perceived Effects of Workplace Romance  among Millennial Generation Organizational MembersA peer-reviewed study published earlier this year in the  Journal of Psychology  furthers a kinder prognosis for instances of coworker romance. The results were derived from a survey of 171 organizational members between the ages of 18 and 29. These members either participated in a romantic relationship with someone from their office or had a privileged insight into one that occurred at their place of employment.Ultimately the study pool’s weigh of the professional implications of an office romance depended on its outcome, with a few exceptions. For instance, however well the relationship faired, most agreed producti vity and gender dynamics were doomed to suffer, but if it was a healthy long-lasting relationship, a similar majority occasioned boosts to employee satisfaction and general-collective office morale. The consequences reported in the cases wherein a picket fence simply wasn’t in the cards, seemed to fractionally rival the boosts attributed to the contrary; psychological unrest, power imbalances, harassment, etc.   We’re all used to the question being posed as ‘How does a romantic partnership affect office culture?’ but rarely the other way around.Love at first siteParticipants in the new study that reported being in a healthy office relationship themselves said that the circumstantial proximity actually improved their love life, in addition to supplying an important base understanding of their career struggles. The cons cited a loss of boundaries,   awkwardness, communication-related complications and  the burden of negative perceptions from others. In fact, it should be noted t hat on balance, coworkers that experience the relationship, irrespective of its length, cited positive implications, while employees that merely witnessed these relationships, by and large, were less likely to index positive effects. The authors wrote, “Results indicate Millennial workplace romance partners focused on personal benefits and difficulties, whereas coworkers tended to identify organizational impacts. Women were more likely than men to identify drawbacks of workplace romance, and employees reporting on hierarchical versus peer-peer romances were more likely to identify the partners gaining workplace advantages. Implications for work-life blending and workplace romance policies geared toward Millennial organizational members are discussed.”

Contingent Job Offers With Strings Attached

Contingent Job Offers With Strings Attached Contingent Job Offers With Strings Attached When you accept a job offer, be sure to understand any contingencies that may cause it to be withdrawn subsequently. For example, some companies perform background and reference checks, and these checks may not be completed by the time that you receive an offer, or even by the time that you actually start work. Negative results on such checks can cause the offer to be withdrawn, or you to be terminated if you already have started work. One particularly controversial variation on this theme is the growing use of employment credit checks among many employers. We discuss this matter in detail under the 3rd heading below. False Statements: Putting anything untrue on your resume, on an employment application or on a company questionnaire is risky. If discovered by the company, this can lead to rescission of an offer or dismissal if you already have begun work. This risk continues to exist even if your false representation has gone undetected for a number of years, and even if you have compiled a stellar work record in the intervening time period.A significant number of employers have a zero tolerance policy towards the use of falsehoods by job applicants, and effectively have no statute of limitations on enforcement thereof. Ironically, though, many companies lure applicants with false representations of their own. In most cases, unfortunately, employees hired pursuant to such claims have little or no opportunity for redress, at least not without launching potentially expensive legal action. Arrests, Convictions, and Legal Actions: Companies commonly ask about past arrests, convictions and other legal actions against you. Minor traffic violations normally are specifically excluded from such inquiries. Accordingly, if you have any past brushes with the law that may impair your marketability as a job applicant, get advice from an attorney who specializes in employment law. Also look into the possibility of officially expunging arrest records. If you are seeking employment in a state other than the one in which you reside, be sure that the attorney understands relevant law in both states, as well as applicable federal laws. You should know precisely what biographical details the prospective employer legally can inquire about, and what you should do if you are asked an illegal question. Bear in mind that an employer may reject you for refusal to answer an illegal question, using the pretext that you were unsuitable for other reasons. Credit Checks: Some companies conduct credit checks on potential hires. While there is conflicting evidence about its predictive power, some firms believe that someone with a poor credit history is likely to be a problem employee. For younger applicants who do not have an established credit history, use of credit checks by an employer can present a barrier to being hired. Note that there is a political movement to restrict  the use of credit checks as a consideration in hiring.Fingerprinting?: Be aware that many financial institutions fingerprint  all employees,  to facilitate criminal background checks. This is dictated by federal regulations  that  generally  bar  people with criminal records from the financial services industry. Companies in other industries also may fingerprint employees, where allowed by law, for the same reasons. Erroneous Information: Background and credit checks at times come back with erroneous information that may place unwarranted blemishes on your record. Understand what redress you have if this happens to you.Invasion of Privacy: If you believe that a prospective employer is trying to invade your personal privacy to an unwarranted degree, reconsider whether you want to work there. A company’s hiring practices often give important clues on how it treats its employees.Changing Business Conditions: A common contingency is that business conditions can change very quickly after a job offer is extended. The company may start a round of layoffs that includes the job just offered to you. Alternatively, you may still have a job, but it may be radically different from what you thought you were getting. For all these reasons, and for the ones mentioned earlier, be careful to keep other options open for as long as you can. In particular, do not decline other job offers until you are certain that you actually will get the one that you prefer.

How to Move Down the Career Ladder

How to Move Down the Career Ladder How to Move Down the Career Ladder Sometimes, moving down the career ladder, instead of up, can make sense. It could be by choice if you want to opt out of a fast-track career for a job thats less stressful or for a job thats more fun. In other cases, especially in a down job market or an industry thats not doing well, it can make sense to look at alternative job options and downsize your career. How do you move down the career ladder instead of up it? First, you need to consider the fact that you may earn less money, but you may also have more flexibility, less stress, and more employment options. Then, you need to consider what alternatives are available and how to find and apply for them. Tips For Moving Down the Career Ladder Make a decision. Decide if you can get by on a lower salary. If so, how much less? Are the benefits a lower level job may have worth what you are potentially giving up in a more lucrative position? Use a salary calculator to see what you could earn in a different job. Consider some of the ways you can change careers without having to go back to school.Consider job options. What are you interested in? What would you like to do? Do you want to leave your  job as a college administrator to work in a bookstore? Or maybe you would like to leave a financial services position to sell real estate, to work at home, in a seasonal job  or at a couple of part-time positions. Review career and job options to get ideas, consider how you could makeover your career, then spend some time deciding  what your ideal employer would be like. Tap your connections.  Your online connections and personal contacts are resources you can use to get information on career options  and to help with a job search. See if you can set up some informational interviews  to find out more about jobs of interest.Give it a try. When youre not sure what you want to do, try it out. Consider a part-time job or volunteer to make sure that it is really something you want to do. Before you give up a high-paying job, it makes sense to test the waters, if you can. There are many opportunities for gig jobs  you can explore while you still have your day job.   Revamp your resume. Resume experts usually tell you that you should highlight your skills and experiences to enhance your employment prospects. In this case, you will want to edit your resume, focusing on what you want to do (rather than what you are doing). Tone it down  so you dont come across as high-powered as you really are. Here are tips for writing a resume when youre overqualified.Use your cover letters. When writing cover letters, focus on your transferable skills that are relevant to the new job. You can use those skills to help explain your transition. Heres an example of a career change cover letter  and tips for writing a cover letter when youre overqualified for a job. Get to know job applications. You may never have had to fill out a job application, so its a good idea to get to know them. You may need to fill out an online job application, a paper job application  or apply in person. Heres what you need to know about job applications and how to complete them.Start a job search. This part is one of the simpler steps in the process of downsizing your career. The higher the level  of the position, the fewer jobs are available and the more competition there is. The opposite holds true, so you will have more choices and more job listings to consider when youre looking for lower-level jobs. Start with the job search engines, then use niche sites to find job postings in the geographic location and industry in which you would like to work. Consider it a transition. Instead of considering your new job a step-down, consider that youre doing something different. Every job is of value, regardless of what were doing. Its what you give and what you get out of your work thats important.Be brave.  Change is scary for most people. It can be even scarier if youre looking for a mid-career change  and starting over. The alternative is worse though. It can be better to take the leap and try something new than it would be to stay stuck in a job you hate. Be humble. This is probably the most important advice there is. When you are moving down the career ladder, by choice or not, you may not be considered as the important person you once thought you were. Be humble, be flexible  and be willing to do what your bosses need you to do.

This Cover Letter Trick Will Make Recruiters Read to the End

This Cover Letter Trick Will Make Recruiters Read to the End This Cover Letter Trick Will Make Recruiters Read to the End When you get the chance to submit a cover letter for the perfect job opportunity, you want your letter to stand out. So here’s a simple trick you can use to get the person reading your cover letter to become quickly interested in you and what you have to say.   The trick begins with the first sentence of your cover letter. Most cover letters that hiring managers receive start out something like this: “I’m writing in response to the marketing associate position at xMatters that was recently advertised.” Or:  Ã¢€œI am writing to apply for the marketing associate position at xMatters.” Or:  Ã¢€œI am writing to apply for the marketing associate position at xMatters, as advertised on LinkedIn.”   Instead of these sentences, consider beginning your cover letter like this: “I’m thrilled to apply for the marketing associate position at xMatters.”   This sentence shows enthusiasm and is much more powerful than writing, “I’m applying for …” or, “I’d like to be considered for …”   The next part of the trick is writing something like this as your second sentence:   “There are three reasons why I would be the perfect match for this position.”   This is the kicker. Saying that you have three specific reasons why you match up for the position is very compelling and will make any hiring manager keep reading. A hiring manager or recruiter will not be able to help but find out what your three reasons are.   Then, after this sentence, you include your three reasons, while adding in some personality. Keep in mind that the person reading your cover letter has never met you, so if you sound like every other person they will not continue to read your letter. That’s why it’s so important that your beginning stands out and catches their eye.   For example, here are some ways to write your reasons while adding in personality:   “The first reason is I’m slightly obsessed with … [insert something that relates to the role; if you’re going for a marketing analytics role, being slightly obsessed with pivot tables would be a plus].”   “The second reason is I have direct experience with … [insert a short, concise story of your experience related to the role].”   “The third (and most important) reason is I’m fascinated with … [insert something that highlights your personality and shows how passionate and enthused you are about the role you’re applying for].”   Of course, there are a few other ways to approach writing a successful cover letter. And note that the type of cover letter you write will depend on the type of company, role, and industry you’re applying to, for, and in. These will all determine how you approach your cover letter writing and which type of letter will get the best response.   If you’re interested in learning more, here is a FREE Cover Letter Examples package and workbook that you can download HERE to get started.

How to Apply the Self-Improvement Movement to Your Career Success

How to Apply the Self-Improvement Movement to Your Career Success How to Apply the Self-Improvement Movement to Your Career Success How to Apply the Self-Improvement Movement to Your Career Success Daily progress in your career development is more important than any big singular breakthrough. What you need to know. [TWEET] The self-improvement genre is exploding these days. That's good news for the masses, and it's good news for everybody thinking about advancing or switching their careers. Why? You don't need to be a reader of Success magazine (or the website's career section) to know the world of self-improvement has so much to teach us about career growth. From employment searches and interview skills to goal-setting and purposeful advancement, the on-the-job applications from this industry/movement are endless and there are lessons for everyone. Goal-setting. Let's start with goals. The first thing every self-help guru will tell you is you need to know where you're going. Then you need to write it down. So, determine your current goal(s) for career success. Is it to start working for Company X? Learn a role in a certain field? Study under a specific type of professional? Increase your responsibilities (along with the chances for a promotion)? Whatever the aim, write it down, then tell at least 5 other people about it. The very acts of documenting and sharing your career goal will help to solidify your resolve to achieve it. If you want to go bigger with 3-, 5- and 10-year plans, you can try, although some experts think with today's rates of change those distant timeframes should best be left vague so you can adapt goals when the world inevitably tilts another direction. The key is to think big and long-term, then write down the steps to getting there. Job searching. Job searching is a 'numbers game.' What do I mean? It's all about volume. Just as a salesperson obsesses over keeping their pipeline full and working all the leads, you too need to be applying for multiple jobs and talking to even more people as you network and potentially shadow role models on the job. Also like a salesperson, you can't take rejection personally because you know that some people are just not the right buyer or just aren't ready to buy. Either way, you believe each rejection is getting you closer to the right job, and you appreciate the opportunity to practice your skills (e.g., skills used in the application process, interview presentation, job researching) along the way. Ultimately, looking at the job search as a numbers game means you won't dwell too long on any particular opening. It means you take your ego out of it when an employer rejects you because you know it's their loss. It means you have several options going at once, always setting up the next interview, sending out the next application, or going to the next job fair. Keeping up with regular, job-search activity increases your odds and keeps yourself balanced if any one of them doesn't work out. Interviewing. The old clich 'practice makes perfect' is well, perfect, for emphasizing how to ace job interviews. You need to sell yourself, and the best sales presentation starts with diligent preparation. By working on your 'sales pitch' every day, you hone your interview skills the same way Jeff Olson of The Slight Edge would recommend: One step at a time, consistently. Over the long haul this consistency accumulates into a critical mass of momentum, what Olson calls 'the edge.' Even if you don't have an interview on any given day, you can still strengthen your skills by role-playing with a friend or former colleague, practicing alone in front of a mirror, or writing down and memorizing your best answers to common questions (e.g., Describe one of your weaknesses, Tell me how you responded to one of your biggest challenges, Tell me about yourself).Continuous improvement is the name of the game here. An often-forgotten part of interviewing is that it provides an opportunity for you the candidate to say no to an employer. So many of us fear rejection going into the process, thinking that the evaluation is only one-way; remember, it's a two-way street! Rejecting the wrong company is as important as finding the right one, and there's power in holding the 'rejection' card. In fact, when you determine a company is not the right fit for you during the preliminary hiring stages, it's your obligation to reject it. You owe it to yourself. On the first date that is a job interview, you have every right to walk away afterwards with no obligation if you don't like what you see. This is also a skill: Identifying the right fit for your talents and conversely, avoiding the bad fits. Purposeful advancement. What self-help coaches invariably preach is the power of being well-read. Being well-read gives you a more grounded life (and keener intelligence), which also applies directly to your career. Whether cultivating a reading habit means keeping up with industry news/opinions, world events, or trade publications, or letting your imagination roam with novels or subjects you ordinarily wouldn't encounter in your work life, the goal is to be reading frequently. A steady diet of reading broadens your perspective, gives you a more sophisticated world view, and keeps your mind sharp by allowing you to get at the heart of what matters to your employer and the people you serve. It's hard to think of a better selling point for somebody wanting to advance in their current organization or general professional role. Having great ideas and being savvy in your ability to think outside the box often starts with being a voracious reader and self-educator. Plus, the better you educate yourself by feeding your mind useful information, the more you add value to every project you undertake, group you join or meeting you attend. Take small steps, not massive leaps. To borrow again from The Slight Edge (or Darren Hardy's The Compound Effect, which carries a similar message), I'd argue making daily incremental progress in your career plans is way more important than any big singular breakthrough. Following this logic, you want to look to the future while gradually improving yourself every day taking one step at a time to bring you closer to your current career goal, whatever it is. I'll leave you with this: An old saying tells us, The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. What's your first step to career success? Need help with your resume?
